Should I just give all of my assets to a relative to hold for me?

Question: Should I just give all of my assets to a relative to hold for me?

Answer: You may want to consider giving all of your assets to a relative, but that still does not qualify you for Medicaid. Medicaid looks at any transfer within 5 years from the application for Medicaid as an improper transfer. An improper transfer is one in which you transfer property and not receive full and adequate consideration for the property that you have transferred. It would not help you to transfer property to a relative to qualify for Medicaid unless you wanted to qualify for Medicaid in 5 years and have that relative own those assets after you have been in the nursing home for 5 years.
