Once I appoint a health care agent, can I change my mind?

Question: Once I appoint a health care agent, can I change my mind?

Answer: Once you appoint a health care agent you can change your mind. In Ohio, the Ohio heath care power of attorney can be revoked by you at any time and you would have to notify your doctors and other healthcare providers, whether it’s your hospital or someone else, that you have changed your Ohio health care power of attorney with regard to who you would want to make medical decisions on your behalf. It’s also important to note that verbal communications to your doctors or hospitals to the extent that you may want to revoke the right of a person to act as your health care proxy or your health care agent that would also be valid and you have to be careful when you make statements then you might be upset at someone and say to the doctor “gee I don’t want them to handle my situation anymore” and that does have the effect of revoking that health care agent as your health care decision maker.
