Should I have a power of attorney for healthcare?

Question: Should I have a power of attorney for healthcare?

Answer: I would highly recommend that you have a power of attorney for healthcare. The document is used for your family or whoever you designate other than your family to handle your medical decisions in the event that you have an accident or you have an illness that requires someone to make medical decisions at a time when you are unable to do so. In Ohio, the Ohio healthcare power of attorney can also be used if you want that family member to make life support decisions and in that situation you would use the Ohio healthcare power of attorney and would not use the Ohio living will. If you would use the Ohio living will then that would trump the Ohio healthcare power of attorney and your doctors would have the say in whether or not to remove life support or to remove food and water from your medical care at a time when you are terminal or in a permanently unconscious state.
