When does a power of attorney become effective?

Question: When does a power of attorney become effective?

Answer: Power of attorney becomes effective on the date of which you designate within the power of attorney that it is effective. In most cases the power of attorney is effective on the date that you would sign the power of attorney. However you could make provisions in the power of attorney for the power to being at a certain time. For example, you may have a durable springing power of attorney that doesn’t really become effective or spring into action until you become medically disabled at which time it would be an event in the future and normally in our document we have two doctors determine that you are medically disabled and then that would trigger the effective date of the power of attorney to be effective.
